This 98 s10 2.2 has what sounds to be upper valve train clatter that gets louder with the rev, alot like a spun bearing would sound from the bottom. I had to remove the throttle body for access to the valvetrain I have thoughlly inspected what I can see I dont see any busted arms, rods, or springs.I cannot start the engine to duplicate the noise and pin point the issue. A few of the rockers feel tight but seem to loosen when eng is rolled over off of compression stroke. Any advise was hoping not to have to remove the head.

Get a look at the timing chain area, may have a broken tensioner on it.

Noted but if the tensioners in the timing chain area were messed up the eng would be running bad this noise gets fainter with speed and the engine other than the noise it runs great. Are the lifters on this eng known for any problems? I work for ford and must say although this gm is alot easier to work on the design is horrible. Its unbeleivable how many external components must be removed just to get the head of a 4cyl.

Not a runnibility problem until it breaks or weras to the point that the noise becomes atrocious. There is a orificed cup plug behind the chain area that gets restricted. It is replaced with GM #14033197. So as the engine runs stronger the more oil flow gets forced out quieting it down some.

There is a tsb on the chain tensioner-#87-61-21A.

I can't say I have run into any lifter problems myself.

Yoyu have to love the folks that engineer cars. Sadistic comes to mind.
