1998 Chevy S-10 shifts hard from first to second gear

When you start off and the transmission shifts from first to second it doesn't shift smoothe, the rest of the shifting is smoothe. It doesn't matter whether it is hot or cold it shifts the hardest when it is cold. I am talking about when the transmission fluid is hot or cold

I would try putting a trans filter in it and new fluid in it.
