I am having trouble getting the air to blow thru defroster and the vents. Just a little bit of air comes out with the majority of the air blowing out the heater vent. How do I check the heater door to make sure its closing?

When you switch from defrost or vent to heat can you hear a very quiet "whoosh"?
If so, You'll need to open the bezel, look at the heater control arms and make sure there are no broken cables, pulls or connectors; if there are, you may need to replace the entire control unit $140 - $200 and the cables/pulls depending on the style - with or with out A/C and where you get it. The cables and pulls are not available as OEM replacement parts, you'll need to get those from a wrecking yard.
You might be able to "splice" the cables with tube style clamps.

The door are on the inside of the air distribution manifold assy under the dash. Not available as a nen OEM replacement part. You'll need to get an old one from a wrecking yard. If you do that, take the cables and pulls as well.

The other alternative is a non-OEM replacement from Vintage Air.
