Where is the Hall Effect Switch mounted? It is not on the distributor as the book indicates.
Can a defective Hall effect Switch cause the engine not to start?
Thank You

Hello,

Yes, a bad Hall Effect Switch will cause a no start.

What is the 8th Digit of the Vin if it is an A then it doesn't have the Hall Effect Switch, it has a pick-up coil. Similar to a hall effect but it uses magnetic field. Which ever it is it will be in the distributor

2.5L (VIN E) 1. Set parking brake, block drive wheels and place transmission in Neutral or Park. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Turn A/C off (if equipped). Ensure SERVICE ENGINE SOON light is off. 2. Connect jumper between ALDL connector terminals "A" and "B". SERVICE ENGINE SOON light should begin flashing. Connect timing light. 3. Note average timing of cylinders No. 1 and 4 and adjust to specification if necessary. See 4- CYLINDER IGNITION TIMING table. Remove jumper from ALDL connector. Ensure SERVICE ENGINE SOON light is off.

Loosen the hold down bolt, and if needed spray some WD-40 down there and use a wrench on the shaft. Are you checking the timing this way?
