I had my motor overhauled and bored out and found there was a crack in the head in my truck the block is a R the machinest I brought it to said he was unable to find another R so he made a U head into a R and told me the only difference is where it was mounted so ive put everything back together and I know everything is on right and it keeps getting hot or the light comes on I should say I thought it might be the thermastat so I replaced it and the gasket still doing the same thing so I guess my question is are R and U heads interchangable please help me

Apparently not. What may have happened is that the water ports/jackets don't match up and coolant can't flow into the heads to cool them off. I wish I could see the underside of each head side by side. It may be obvious. However, if the 2 heads DO interchange, there may be some other problem such as the incorrect head gasket or improperly installed head gasket. This will cause the exact same condition. Something to check. Good luck.
