1988 chevy astro van with 80k on a rebuilt engine, 280k overall. The van runs smooth and well except during hard acceleration or a steep climb. This is when the van will have a quick chug or surge, if the van shifts down to a lower gear then the frequncy is less until the van reachs a steady speed. The spark plugs and wires are in good shape, no check engine light and no engine codes appear after checking for codes.

I dont know what motor you have, but I had a 92 K1500 with the hei 350, with about 35 k on a rebuild, and 170k on the body, and it would do the exact same thing. It would run smooth until you accelerated and only did it at highway speeds. After going through and raplacing the computer and other parts it came down to be the distributor cap. Im not sure how much it is by tiself, cuz I had the whole ignition system replaced for $350. I do know that after the fact it ran like an entirely knew truck. If it is an hei check the screw on your distributor cap because they're known to be trouble makers. Just a thought.
