I have a '90 s10 blazer with 37,000 miles and replaced engine (4.3)v6, well i'm stumped. i thought the smell was coming from the belt moving over a frozen pulley but all the pulleys are spinning freely. i recognize the smell from when my alt. went out, the pulley froze and i noticed the smell and, my batt. gauge went to zero. this time everything appears normal, starts and runs fine. there's just a strong odor of burning brakes? but the brakes are cold and i know thats not the prob. cause it happens in the morning durring first start of the day warmup and idle.
i live in northern alaska where the temp can get to -30 below with -100 wind chill. but that has'nt been a problem. everything works but this smell just started happening today and it's horrible. i'm stuck using my snowmachine everywhere and its too cold for that.

Nice Deer

The only reason you're not driving is from the smell?

Take a look for anything getting on the manifold or exhaust pipe- like a vacuum line, wiring, oil leak etc.

Also, feel how how the alternater, a/c compressor (like you would need it!) Are getting and carefull look for a small collection of rubber particles accumulated that may indicate where some wear problem is occuring around the pulleys

Yah I think oil is grtting on the manifold, cause I found an oil leak from my remote oil filter return line. I'm going to change it out and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks for your help. I'm goin huntin, by the way thats a pic of a caribou. I dont think we have deer up here.
