Engine problem
1985 Other Chevrolet Models V8 Two Wheel Drive 62000 miles

Preesure reads 90psi regardless of oil level when engine running. Vehicle is an 85 El Camino Conquista that has only been run infrequently for the past several years. I just purchased it, so have very limited knowledge of the past history. Appreciate any help you cangive me. Thanks a lot.

Hi there,

The oil level, with in reason will not affect the oil pressure. In the oil pump there is a valve that controls max oil pressure, it is operated by oil pressure acting against a spring loaded piston, when pressure reaches predetermined point the valve opens and oil is by passed back to sump maintaining a relative constant max oil pressure. Other things come into consideration as well. But I feel that this valve is sticking (oil pressure relief valve) causing excessive high oil pressure) the infrequent use you mentioned could cause this valve to gum up and stick. It may free up on it's own but you run the risk of blowing out oil seals if the pressure is to high.
