Recently the engine started tapping on my 2002 monte carlo with 65k miles. It occurs upon starting and goes away after running at 3k rpm for 1 minute. Not low on oil and just changed oil and filter and still have problem. (Changed oil regularly) If adjustment is needed, why does noise go away.

Hey tom,

if it sound like the whole valve train is making noise you could be looking at a lifter or two bleeding down and pumping up after you start it again. Very common problem on your vehicle and may other gm's

So what causes it now that didn't happen for 5 yrs? Do I need them replaced or is there an additive I can add to prevent the bleed off? Will changing the oil viscosity from 5w30 to something else eliminate the problem?
Thank you very much!

If it is infact the lifters what happens is they are internally valved and sealed and supposed to hold pressure but after time the seals and valves wear causing this problem, and its not just you its every gm 6 cyl made 1996 and up, the oil will not change it the fix is replacement, but let them get a little worse
