Cant shift out of park

95 monte carlo 166000mi rebuilt transmission less than a 1000 miles ago. My car gets stuck in park sometimes. If you let it warm up, move the steering coloum up or jigger the shifter around you can get it to shift out of park. This sometimes takes an hour or so. It dont do it all the time just on and off. Also the BRAKE light is on and the fluid is fine, the emergency brake is not engaged. Could this be connected with shifter problem. Nobody has been able to me with this problem. What is wrong. Please help.

You say the transmission has about a thousand miles
what I would look at the linkage from the shifter to the transmission. To check to see if anything came loose after the transmission was put in.
The brake light first place to check is the e brake
switch itself. It might be grounding out or out of adjustments.
