gear shifter does not release from park

hi my monte carlo will not release from park?

Hello,

It sounds like you might have a faulty shift interlock solenoid.
When you depressed the brake pedal, this solenoid gets triggered and allows to be shift out of park.
This solenoid can fail over time due to wear.
If your vehicle is a floor shift the solenoid is located under the shifter housing. You will have to remove the trim around the shifter to access it (see picture).

If it is a console shift, then the solenoid is located in steering column.
