Transmission problem
2002 Chevy Monte Carlo 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 10000+ miles

This is actually not my car so guessing at some things (year etc). Car is running fine until it goes into overdrive. At that point the RPM race up but no speed is added. Sometimes there is a grinding noise as well. Speed doesn't seem to decrease but it does feel like it's stalling but ends when you take your foot off the gas. Have been told that one of the cataylitic converters (there's two?) Are plugged but to me that seems like it wouldn't make the rpm's race?

So is it a power train problem?

A converter would cause other problems. I recommend having the transmission checked by a certified trans mechanic. It sounds like there may be a problem with the torque converter.
