I have a 2004 Malibu. The car ran low on oil but not out. The engine started tapping. How do I repair the problem?

How often is the oil changed? What motor? Did you add oil? Why was the oil low?

2.2 engine. Yes I added oil. I had the oil changed like I normally do every 3 mos.
