The gears in my transmission are slipping. (When I drive and step on the gas pedal it will either stay in 1st or drop to 1st from 2nd.) Is this issue something that can be fixed without doing a complete rebuild? If not approx. How much will it cost to rebuild or get a refurbished one?

What you described doesn't sound like the transmission is slipping. It sounds like it's not shifting properly. When you drive up a hill, will the engine rev but the car not speed up? Has the check engine light come on? Does it shift through all gears?
