How do I release the gas pedal from the floor board?

Car was fine. Went into store for 10mins. When I came out, the gas pedal in my 2000 Chevy Malibu was stuck to the floor board. Started the vehicle and chance it home. Car could only go 5mph but I made it. HELP!
