2001 Chevy Malibu loud exaust

My cars exaust has gotten louder daily and today it backfired on me. Before the increase in noise, it sounded like somthing was rattling in the area of the muffler. Could this be something as simple as a loose pipe or muffler or is it likely to be something more serious? And how expensive is it to get something like this fixed?
