I have a 1997 chevy malibu 4 cylinder 2.4liter engine. When I turn on the a/c, the car shuts off completely

It sounds like your a/c compressor is locked up. You can replace it or unplug it so it wont turn on. It may also turn on when you turn on the defrost. If you cant afford to replace it right now keep it unpluged. Hope this helps.
