After troubleshooting I believe that the oil pump is not working in my 3.1 lumina. I removed the oil filter and started the car and nothing came out. When I tapped on the oil pan I heard a rattle as though some kind of rod/pin is loose(I emptied the oil). What I want to do is drop the pan and investigate. How do I drop the pan? And, how does the pump work - what makes it turn to pump the oil to lubricate the engine? I have not been able to find any articles/sites to explain. Please, any help would be appreciated! THANX.

Whew. You have a big job ahead of you. To drop the oil pan you need to remove the right side lower control arm, outer tie rod and suspension support. On top of that you need to take the exaust system off and many other parts. To be honest (and Ive done this job many times) its easier to leave the suspension and all that connected and just pull the engine. The only differance is, when you pull the engine, you disconnect the transmission and wiring harness. Its a big job no matter how you look at it but really. Pulling the engine is waaaaaaaay easier. If your sure you want to take on this job. Reply to this and tell me which route you want to take. Also if your not 100% sure about whats going on inside that pan. Id be looking for another engine. Actually I am! I have a 99, same problem, with a bad oil pump and rod knocking. Let me know if and how you want to approach this and I'll be happy to give you step by step details.
