Car got close to red line on gauge and now coolant leaking out a hose on firewall, it was never hooked up to anything and I was told it was a bad heater control valve, is this true, if so why would that leak coolant?

Some cars have a control valve that turns on and shuts off the flow of coolant to the heater core through those hoses on the firewall. However, I think this car lacks such a valve and the heater is controlled only mechanically by the ductwork door, i.E, coolant flows through the heater core all the time. Coolant can leak from the hoses; from the valve, if equipped; really from just about anywhere. At any rate, if you don't get it fixed, you'll probably be back at that red line soon.
