Space between fan and radiator

65 impala ss 400 engine how much space should there be between the fan and the radiator for best cooling. I am using a shroud also.

There should be enough space so the fan is about a inch away from the radiator. With a shroud the fan blades should be just inside the shroud for best cooling. Have seen fans more than 3 inches away from radiator but there collant efficence was cut down with no shroud. The fan should be far enough so it will not hit the radiator with any motor movement
