How can u tell if I need to change my timing belt?

I have a 96 3000gt I was wondering if there is a way to tell if I need to change the timing belt yet or not.

On a 96 I would say yes. Generally mileage is the factor but at that age the belt could be rotting. If that engine looses a belt then you will be in for some big bucks
