2004 Chevy Impala speedometer works only sum of the time

My speedometer has trouble keeping the correct speed if it works at all. Sometimes it will work fine, sumtimes not at all, or it will freeze on like 15 mph and not record the speed. If I drive on the highway for awhile it seems to take care of it but only for a short time and then doesnt work again.

3.4 or 3.8L engine- the vehicle speed sensor is located on the right rear of engine compartment, end of transaxle-could be a loose connection or the VSS itself or wiring/computer problem.
