I am still waiting to hear officially from the service station where I had the vehicle towed, however, initial prognosis is that my ball joint went out on the front left (driver's side) wheel. I lost the ability to steer properly, grinding noise, and there was a report of ball bearings dropping behind the vehicle.

It is my understanding that the repair price varies based on the difficulty of making the repair. The parts are generally not that bad. Do you have any idea if the Express van falls toward the easier repair or most difficult?

Ball joints are just one ball and socket pressed together, not ball bearings. Wait for the full report. Either the CV joint which has ball bearings in its make up, or something I have never heard of failed. It is also possible that BOTH failed, as the ball joint seperates, the control arm moves too far rearward, and then your CV axle breaks apart. But where yours is two wheel drive, the ball bearings are a mystery. If it's non rack and pinion, the steering box may have ( I have not seen) blew out, and some of the recirculating balls came out.
