1998 Chevy Cheyenne speedometer

My speedometer has started to fluctuate or just drop down to zero and my transmission falls out of gear leaving me coasting this just started a week ago and its not getting any better. The service engine soon light has also come on and off since the past four weeks. Please let me know what you think.

Could be the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor)For starters have the PCM (computer) scanned for codes, Autozone will do it for free. If the PCM sees a problem it will store a code that will help in diagnosing the problem, get back with the exact codes. If the PCM doesnt see the truck moving (speedo) it wont let the trans shift
