Hi. I have a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24, 2.4 litre engine with 54,000 miles on it. My water pump is leaking and I was going to replace it myself. According to haynes manual procedures, the first step is to jack the car up, disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold and then remove the exhaust manifold. Is this neccessary? I can't see where the exhaust system gets in the way and exhaust bolts are notorious for breakage. Thanks.

Hello !!

Yes, you have to remove upper exhaust manifold heat shield, exhaust manifold brace, lower heat shield loosen exhaust manifold - to exhaust manifold spring loaded nuts, radiator outlet pipe to water pump cover bolts and disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.

the water pump its driven by timing chain idler and is mounted on rear of timing chain housing

here an exploded view of the pump:

I would recommend you to use some wd40 or screw loosing spray to remove the screws and nuts and put some anti seize to install them ...

good Luck and thanks a lot for your Donation!!

any other question we will here to assist you!
