Re: 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, 47.593 miles. Engine: 2.2L L4 (L61)--Manual

The charging system light in my car goes on and off while I am driving. My vehicle manual suggests a loose generator drive belt or another electrical problem. I do notice a popping noise from the AC sometimes (as if it's charging), and lately there is a deep grinding noise coming from beneath the car when I slow down. (It doesn't sound like my brakes, it sounds like something is scraping the ground). I am not sure if all of these issues are related. Are they? Also, if this is indeed an electrical problem, about how much would the repair cost?

Very difficult to estimate electrical prices, they can be easy or lengthy. Check the drive belt tensioner on the front of the engine. Be sure it has enough tension to keep the belt tight, might have a weak/broken spring in it.

HAve the charging system checked. Sounds like the battery and or alternater are on their way out. $100-$400? Like Jack says may be a weak tensioner also.

The popping noise sounds like the a/c clutch engaging. If your hearing it more than normal the freon may be getting low and be ready for a re-charge.

To help narrow down the nosie, drive it by someone outside the car and see if they can help deciper where its coming from. Have the front brakes been done yet?
