Can you please tell me how much you think it would be to replace the passengers window motor/regulator. The window does not budge when you want to close it. Thanks a bunch.

The front driver-side power window motor is in need of replacement. I can see that it is riveted on and I can drill those out. My problem is where the regulator (scissor-type) and motor attach: I have read that there is a spring mechanism that needs to be dealt with using a special tool. How do I detach the regulator from the motor safely and then attach a new motor correctly?

Thanks for the reply, but you did not address the spring issue. Where exactly is this spring and how do I keep it from releasing when I disconnect the motor from regulator? I want to replace just the motor, not the regulator too. Also, the first link you posted did not work.

I thought I did address the spring, non in yours! The directions are specific to your car. The first link is dead, it only shows where I got the info! You do NOT need to remove the regulator on yours... You do have to remove the regulator because it has a coiled spring on convertibles.

The motors in my windows are bad. They are the original motors for my car. About two months ago we tried to get the motors out to replace them with new ones, but the old motors are stuck to the gears. Any suggestions as to how I can get the old motors out to replace them with the new ones?

Thank you so much! You actually responded to two of my questions on here. I am going to give both a try. It will save me from having to find a way to get a whole new car, especially with the other question about the fuel lines. I appreciate it. :)

can someone tell me what exactly i need to replace in my power window motor on my cavalier trying to rebuild it and even after getting new brushes for it and installing them still weak and not enough power to move the regulator very much at one time? Could it be the spindle or magnet? any pointers will help.... thank you. p.s. i have tested everything and did replace the switch cause the other side was not working and it was the switches and now the drivers side still isn't working, at my wits end with this..... time to buy a new motor or is it possible to make it work?

I have never tried rebuilding a motor there reasonable to buy a rebuilt one try www.rock.com or amazon for a better price on one then the auto parts store.I would just replace it if its not the brushes then you have a stator or magnet issue.

Look for a thermal cutout inside the motor. I think they're a glass bulb with a set of contacts, but Wrenchtech mentioned some other device that I can't remember. The contacts in those glass bulbs become pitted and add resistance to the electrical circuit. They cause more problems than they prevent. You can prove it by temporarily bypassing it with a jumper wire. They do that on a regular basis at one local used car dealership, but I would never recommend doing that on a permanent basis. Lawyers and insurance investigators love to find modifications that could lead to problems.

I got an answer that said to remove the door shell. On the Cavalier, once the door panel has been removed, there is nothing but sheet metal and a few holes through which some of the inner workings can be seen. I don't see any way to remove this sheet metal. Is the door shell the outer piece? On this site, the illustrations on R&R the power window motor show cleqr access to the motor, not so on the Cavalier. HELP! Should I just throw in the towel and take it all to a shop?

dont give up, some access to the window motors can vary, if the inner panel can not be removed you must remove the outter shell, it is easier than it looks. Please let me know how it goes.

When I called it a door shell I was refering to the door panel itself. Sorry about that. The access holes in the door seem small but with a little patience you can get the job done.

good luck

To change the power window motor .. Remove the door shell of course

You will see the motor for the window .. Unplug the power.

The motor is actually riveted in so you need to drill out the rivets. You can drill these out through the door itself use a larger bit so you can see the rivets holding the motor to the regulator. There is 3 rivets.

CAUTION: Sure you support the window before you drill out the rivets as the window will fall when the motor is removed.use tape or a wedge to hold it up.
Dont use to large of a bit to drill the rivets holding the motor to the regulator as you will need to use the holes in the regulator for the new motor.

Remove the old unit .

Then install the new motor with self tapping screws . Plug in the power.
let me know how it goes.

Good luck ..
