2001 Chevy Cavalier wheeze

My car seems to wheeze when I hit the gas. Just looking for some suggestions before I go to the garage - need to be educated to be sure I don't sound like a dumb blond and get taken for a ride (hahaha a ride)

Have them check fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge. If fuel pressure is low it is most likely a bad pump or possibly a clogged fuel filter. If OK have them check converter back pressure, the converter may be clogged.
Have them hook up to a scan tool to see what the sensors are displaying, you may find a sensor out of range or close enough to cause the problem.
Also check the fuel pressure regulator for gas in the vacuum line.
