1997 Chevy Cavalier 6 cyl Automatic 130000 miles

Please help! I just recently bought this car (badly needed) and it is having problems. The check engine light came on.
When you first start the car there is a little rattle sound at the very beginning - just for a moment - I was told this is normal with Chevy Cavaliers? I am not sure. Also, when the brakes are hit there is a little thump sound.

I had it looked at and was told there is a leak in the oil pan gasket and was quoted almost $300 to fix it. Also I was told there are 2 codes one is P0719, and the other is P1655

Please help! I am on a tight budget and need this car to be reliable. Are these serious problems? Is the car junk?

The check engine light went off after the gas cap was taken off and put back on.

Hi
Would you recheck engine I show no 6cyl also thoes codes don't apply to your car. As for oil leak, rattle and thump if it runs and gets you there and back then I would roll with it.
Let me know
Thanks for donate

Ok, The one code P0719 is defined as "Brake Switch B Low Circuit Input", and the other one is "Manufacturer Control Auxilary Inputs Auxilary Outputs". Those are generic codes from something like an Actron OBD II code scanner. If possible have some on with a Snap-On scanner give it a shot. Way more accurate. Also the rattle you hear on start up is somewhat normal, I have that on my 2002. It has to do with the exhaust if it is the same noise. Mine just shakes a lil. As for the thumping noise in the brakes. Have someone check the sway bar links. They are cheap to replace, and do cause the sound you say you hear.
