My name is T.J. I have a 1996 cavalier 2.2L auto 3 speed transmission, it recently started refusing to shift out of 2nd gear, feeling like it's in neutral, I checked Trans fluid and it was low so I topped it up but nothing changed, the fluid was a little browned but still pretty red. The TV cable if fine. I guess what I'm trying to ask is do I need a new transmission? Or can I do something to save that one? The last ppl I asked said something about the governer but I didn't understand what he was talking about, the speedo is working.
Thanks T.J.

Sounds like you need a tranny. Especially at 260,000 miles. Automatics have a lifespan of around 100,000-150,000 on average. Your very lucky to have gotten so many out of yours. Depending on the condition of the car, you should consider the price of getting your tranny fixed (around 1600$ or more) or calling it quits due to high mileage, and buying something newer.
