1989 Chevy Cavalier Check engine soon light

Hi, I just recently changed my spark plugs and wires and my car runs great; however while taking my car around the block just after the change my "check engine soon" light came on. I tried disconnecting the negative on the battery and I changed each spark plug one by one so I know that they are going to right place. How can I troubleshoot this problem first without taking it to a shop? Thank you.

Hello

Since you do not have a diagnostic scanner and do not wish to pay for a diaganostic scan, you can scan for the trouble codes by performing the following operations.
