1984 Chevy Cavalier Better engine performance

I have a 1984 Cavalier that only goes up to 80mph is there any way I can legally and safely increase this limit to the standard 120 of today's cars. Can I install a diferent engine to do this? Like for instance the 1987 pontiac sunbird V6 engine. Thanks for your help

I don't know where you get that idea than any standard of 120MPH is used anywhere. The operating system in your car is computer controlled and everything is done through factory programming of the computer.

Changing the engine to anything other than what was in it when it was emissions certified would be against Federal law.
