1986 Chevy Camaro thermostat

I bought a camaro knowing it didn't have a thermostat in it well I bought one and have put it in and taken it out five times already the haynes book said that you have to put the new one in just like the old one my problem is I don't know how the old one was in how do I install the thermostat properly
