Engine Performance problem
2005 Chevy Aveo 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100K miles

Engine shudders/sputters like it is going to stall for 1-2 seconds when idling. Sometimes does it 4 or 5 times while sitting at a light - sometimes its fine and doesnt do it at all. Weather (cold / rain) does not seem to be a factor. Does not do it at all when driving or at least that I can detect/feel.

Check and test the following below:

Oxygen Sensor
Catalytic Converter
Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this).
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

Dirty or worn spark plugs
Bad plug wires
Weak ignition coil
Wet plug wires
Coil and Rotor
