Reverse problem

1997 Chevy Astro Van, Rear-wheel drive, 133,000 miles. Shifted into reverse and it simply didn't work. No warning. No nothing. The car revs up like it wants to go, but nothing happens. What might be the problem? Is this something I have to take to the dealer to fix?

If the forward gears work the trans needs a rebuild

Thanks for the tip. Turns out that it did need a transmission rebuild and it now runs find.
