On sunday morning I drove off my cousin driveway on a hill. Not a 1/4 down I noticed the check gauge light was on. The oil gauge was on 0 and everthing else was fine. I turned off the van, checked the oil and was a qrt low. My cousin returned with oil. After I added the qrt the gauge still read 0. I was about 30 to 40 min away from my house. I decided to drive home made it with no other issue then the light. My question is could it be a sensor of some sort and would the engine stop if there wasnt any pressure?

Hello, I'd want to get the oil pressure checked. It could be the sending unit has a problem? My info shows the unit to be located almost under the distributor. The wiring colors for the connector are gray--orange-- tan with white tracer. Because that unit does more than one thing, you might unplug the fuel pump relay, see if the vehicle still starts, if it doesn't, something wrong with the sending unit or wiring circuit. That probably isn't a conclusive test, just a thought. If you ran it long enough without oil pressure, the engine would sieze.

Your loss of oil pressure sounds to me like the oil in the pan sloshed forward in the pan causing no oil to be picked up by the oil sump. And to answer the question no the vehicle wont shut down that is why there is a guage. This vehicle will run until the motor siezes. That way you know who makes money for those costly engine repairs. Hope this helps. Alan retired but its in my blood.
