Electrical problem
1996 Chevy Astro 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I replaced the altinator in my van and it is not working. I took it back to the place I purchased it from and they tested it. As I watched them test it they pluged in a 4 wire plug into the side of the altinator and another wire on the bolton the back. When I took the altinator out I dont remember unpluging the 4 wire part from the side. I was told the altinator was ok and took it home and looked for the 4 wire part. I could not find it, there is a single wire in the location where the plug should be but no plug. I was wondering could I have left the plug on the altinator and thats where the single wire plugs into? Thanks for any help. SC

With your application, it shows a one wire connector besides the bat terminal. Depending on the application, not all terminals are used. The one terminal should be the L terminal, excite voltage. Without excite voltage the alternator won't charge. Does the charge lite on the dash work? Another possible issue is an open circuit from alternator bat terminal to battery. With everything turned off, do you have battery voltage at the alternator bat terminal?
