1995 Chevy Astro 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

a friend of mine has a 95 chevy astro taht will not start without having to put starting fluid in it and when you put it in drive it cuts off. We have replaced fuel pump fuel filter and coil we have not replaced the fuel pressure regulator would this cause this condition

Can you check fuel pressure? Do you have the spider fuel system? Have you tried injector cleaner? Are there any codes?

There is no engine codes due to service engine light never came on and I don't have a pressure gauge but I took the fuel line loose at fuel filter and getting a strong stream of fuel but it will run after spraying starting fluid into the intake but shuts off after puting it in drive

I'd still have to check fuel pressure, that spider fuel system is known for problems. The poppets may need cleaning? How come the mil doesn't come on?
