When I drive especially when it's cold, I can feel it change to 2nd gear then instead of changing to 3rd gear the check trans display on dash and flashes. I stop and shut off the engine, restart and the same happens. But when it's hot it drives normally like more than 10 minutes driving it then drive normal.

The flashing Check Transmission light on your 1991 Isuzu Rodeo indicates that there is a fault or issue detected in the transmission system. The symptoms you described, such as the transmission not shifting properly when cold and the Check Trans light flashing, suggest that there may be an issue with the transmission itself or its control system. Here are a few potential causes to consider:

Low transmission fluid level: Insufficient transmission fluid can cause improper shifting and lead to various transmission issues. Check the transmission fluid level and ensure it is at the appropriate level according to the manufacturer's specifications. If it is low, top it up with the recommended fluid and monitor if the issue improves.

Faulty transmission sensor: The transmission system relies on various sensors to monitor parameters such as speed, temperature, and fluid pressure. A malfunctioning sensor can cause the transmission to behave erratically. Have the transmission sensors checked, and replace any faulty sensors if necessary.

Transmission control module (TCM) issue: The TCM is responsible for controlling the transmission's shifting and overall operation. A malfunctioning TCM can cause incorrect shifting patterns or failure to engage certain gears. Have the TCM scanned for error codes to pinpoint any specific issues or malfunctions.

Internal transmission problem: There could be an internal mechanical issue within the transmission itself, such as a worn clutch or a faulty solenoid.
