Check engine light/slow acceleration

When I start my car, initially, and put in drive the car will hardly move, then the check engine light comes on. When I turn the car off and on again it will drive without any problems. This happens about once a week and after a couple days the check engine light goes off. What is causing this problem and is it an expensive problem?
