Hello,

The check engine light comes on when the on-board diagnostic system detects issue(s) with one or more sensors or components within the engine management system. The check engine light can also get triggered by a fault in the transmission. This can also be a fault in the emission system.

When the engine light gets illuminated, first step would be to scan the vehicle for trouble codes. The codes can help with the diagnostics of why the light is on.
Typically, you can take your vehicle to your local auto parts store (if it is drivable) and they can scan it for you and provide you with the code(s).

Keep in mind that when the engine light flashes it typically means the issue is urgent and needs to be taken care of soon.

Let me know what code(s) this vehicle is producing.
Thank you.
