Check Engine light came on today, I keep the car maintained fairly well. Oil is changed regularly, car has not had a bumper to bumper check in about 10 yrs. I do know one cylinder is not running 100% and last year engine oil was found in coolant receptacle creating a muddy sludge. That was cleaned up and radiator drained and flushed. Of course based on age and mileage it was recommended to replace engine or car. Not financially able to do either at this time, just wondering what I could be looking at to repair, obviously I'm trying to keep the car running, I only put about 2,000 mi. A year on it.

Scan for codes then look under OBD1 on our site under how to repair.

I don't understand the codes part, the check engine light blinks once then blinks 5 times quickly.

That is a code 15which there isn't one, are you sure it doesn't blink twice first then five times? That would be a code 25 which there is and that means it's a lean fuel mixture so check fuel pressure with a gauge autoparts rents it, check for air leaks going to and from engine like exhaust prior to converter. It can also be a bad ecu.O2 sensor and or air meter behind airfilter. It shold repeat that code a couple of times.

I'll check again soon, but I carefully watched and saw one and then 5 quickly. Hoping it's as simple as needing a new fuel filter but with the age and mileage don't guess it will be. It's great that you are answering me. Thank you.

Code 15 is either a code 51 or one for cruise control which has no effect on running. Check your fuel pressure with a gauge should be 30-37psi at idle. You may need an adapter to do this. Then check to see if you have a good spark at spark plug. If vacuum line is disconnected at regulator then pressure with be 38-44 psi or should be.
