Check coolant light appeared on my dash?

I got a “check coolant” light on my dash today. The reservoir looks a bit low so I’m sure it needs a flush and/or refill. Am i able to simply just add coolant to the reservoir? If so, how long can i safely use it that way? I don’t recall changing the coolant in the 5 years since I’ve owned it.

Yes, you can just add coolant, but if it has been a while I would do a drain and fill with new coolant.
