Catalytic converter

SUV was making noise and was told that it was the catalytic converter. I am having it replaced. I read that the converter can fail if clogged, engine problems, like faulty valves, or pistons. My question is, should I also have the engine checked after the replacement? I will be driving to Texas from Oregon in September/October and do not want anymore expensive problems.
Thanks

Good morning.

No, have it replaced and then drive the truck. See if you feel any difference in the performance from before the converter was replaced.

In most cases, there is no long term engine damage from it being clogged. Since it is a 1999, it just wore out over time.
