I need to replace my catalytic converter. I currently have a single exhaust pipe that exits out the passenger rear side of the vehicle. When I go to purchase the replacement, most sites show a two-piece unit. Do I need two pieces or just a single right-sided unit?

Hi,

The catalytic converter on this vehicle is bolted to the exhaust manifold and connected via a cross-under pipe to the rest of the exhaust (pic 1 below). For me to determine what needs to be repaired, I need to know the specific code that was found. It should be either a P0420 or a P0430. That will identify which side is causing the issue.

Also, one of the most common causes for either of the codes I mentioned is a faulty oxygen sensor or spark plugs needing to be replaced. See pic 2 below

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

I have erased the codes. I know it was definitely PO420. I think it was also PO430. I know there were 2 codes. I recently had the spark plugs changed. I think I'll try to replace the O2 sensors, as you mentioned, before I replace the catalytic converter. Would they cause shuddering on acceleration at certain speeds or a jerking - feels like it gets stuck shifting at 40 mph and 60mph? I replaced the transmission last year (20k miles ago).

Hi,

The two codes indicate both converters. I would do exactly what you mentioned to see if the codes go away. Also, if you have a live data scanner, check the short-term fuel trims and let me know what they are.

Here is a link you may find of interest as well, it explains how to test an oxygen sensor. It could save you some money if the original ones are still good.
