Car will start once battery is jumped when the transmission is shifted into gear it shuts off?

Car was being driven down highway when the heat cut off / potentially overheated and shuts off. Was towed home, tried to do some simple things for repair. When car is started it will run pretty normally, maybe a little harder of an idle than normal but not too much and once put in gear the car turns off.
