Car will not go into drive whiled cranked and running

Pull up at work. Left car in park while running. Husband gets out closes door. Car still running but will not go into drive. Gears not catching when trying to put into reverse neutral or drive.

So does the shift lever move but the transmission does not shift? That sounds like a bad cable, either a bushing failure or it disconnected from the shifter or transmission.

Or does it seem like the transmission is shifting but the car does not move? That would be internal on the transmission.
