A few weeks ago, I had a blow out on the highway, and changed my tire to the spare I have that came with my vehicle. Had no issues using it besides the Traction control light would come on along with the tire pressure light. I knew that I would need to get a new tire ASAP. Car driving has no issue besides what I mentioned. A few days go by, and I am off work on my way to get a new tire; suddenly my car goes into complete limp mode at a red light. It would not do anything. After I started my car back up my car check engine light comes on. The car gets home finally via tow, and I was able to get the code scanned. The code was P0700. I looked, and it was transmission error code. I am super confused because my car has not had any other issues until I changed tire to a spare, and car goes into limp mode. I am super curious to know if it would be because of my spare tire, or would I need to get a whole new transmission to fix this issue? Please assist, I appreciate it.

Hello,

Keep in mind that the vehicle is not designed to be driven on the spare wheel/tire for an extended period of time as that can lead to drivetrain or transmission damage.
The spare is designed to be only put on to be able to drive to the shop for repair and not to be driven at highway speed. As the overall diameter of the spare is not the same as the full-size wheel/tire and that will put stress on the drivetrain.

So, it is possible to have transmission issues due to being driven on the spare.

The vehicle goes into limp mode in order to protect the engine and transmission from further damage.

Are you still using the spare?

If so a good first step would be to get the correct size wheel/tire and clear the code and see if that comes back on.

I have attached the diagnostics steps for the code P0700 below.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.

No, the tire is replaced now. I only drove my car home and have only moved it just to go get a new tire. The car is still going into limp mode, and it is still only throwing just that one code. I have been reading and it is saying more than likely TCM. I am just confused as to it has not shown any signs of any transmission issues and I have had the car for 2 years now. I appreciate your assistance.

Ok. Take a look at the diagnostics instructions that I have added in the previous response. It might help you determine the issue.
Did it go to limp mode while on the spare or after the replacement was done?

Here is a guide that covers limp mode in pretty general terms which can help with this as well.

Let me know what you find or questions you have after you run through that testing.

Thank you so much. It went into limp mode before the replacement tire. While I was on my way to get a new tire is when it went into limp mode. The tire shop and my house are maybe 5 minutes from me.
