Car surges when going uphill on highway at high rate of speed. About 70 mph

When I'm driving on flat ground, don't seem to have a problem, after going uphill on the highway, when I get to a steeper section it surges on it's own, then after I pull off highway, it stinks. Recently had intake manifold gaskets replaces. Was smelling bad smell before manifold fixed, but now smell is different after surging. Is it the transmission?

First thing I would do is get the computer (OB2) scanned. This will make it easier to help in the diagnosis. Most auto part stores will do this for free. When you get the codes, write them down and let me know what they are. There are many problems that could create this symptom and without speculating for hours let's try this out first and I'll be happy to help you out in finding the problem.
