Hello, I have a 2002 trailblazer that has been sitting since may 2014 and hasn't been started or running since yesterday. It has a little bit of gas that I put in it yesterday just enough to take if from my home to the mechanic. I charged the battery as well. At first, it started and ran normally but the second time, it died every time I took my foot of the gas. It sounds great. It sounds like it always had when I drove it. I was told I just need a new battery. Help please. Thanks so much.

If it sat since 2014 I wouldn't be surprised it needs a new battery.A bad battery can cause a whole host of weird running issues. Was the battery tested as bad?If so replace the battery and go from there.

But if it were the battery, would it even start or have lights and radio? I thought when a new battery was needed, a car won't even start and the lights and radio don't come on either?

You could have a weak battery ducking all the power the alternator is making to run everything. Did the battery test bad? If so replace it and make sure the battery cables are clean and tight. You could have multiple problems, it did sit for a while, you could have bad gas, old water in it etc. You have to start somewhere and a good place to start is making sure the vehicle is getting the power it needs to run all the computers etc.I have seen bad batteries that tested good and drilled caused weird issues. Also have the alternator tested as well.
